With the agreement between the regions and the WRU signed off, the regions should at last be able to make deals with the players that they want to keep. It has been mentioned in another thread (NEWS) that the regions are being asked to cut their squads down to 36 players plus transitional and academy players. The current Ospreys squad has 10 players named so we would be looking at releasing 16 or more of them. Most, if not all, of the players will more than likely be taking a significant wage cut due to drop in funding. We know that Roots and Hawkins are off to Exeter.
Is this how our squad shapes up for next season?

We need to recruit at scrumhalf. *Edited to show a 37 man squad and the recent news.
*The players highlighted in grey are in contract. *Edited to include Jac, Kieran and Morgan.
*Edited to show Nicky and Owen Williams signing and now including James Ratti and all the departures.
Now including our new 9s.
Now including our new hooker.
Ethan Lewis finally confirmed.
Another scrum-half has been signed, Cameron Jones:

Ospreys had a controlled game against the university over at Llandarcy this morning with two further hit outs planned for next week.
One is at Sketty lane maybe on Tuesday and the other is at St Helens definitely next Friday which is open to the public.
6 Ruddock recruits from English academy sides on view two of which are southern hemisphere origin, Falatou/Tuilagi connections, the tight head is massive 140 kg plus a centre from Harlequins who's good and a unit, think it's Rory something or other.
ECOWATT is definitely on the new blue/ black kit.
Rumours over there that Pivac may have joined Cardiff in a consultancy role, anyone heard anything?
Rhys Davies and Sam Parry we're back there watching from the touch lines.
Nothing else new to offer today sorry
Perhaps it's in the wrong topic, but thankfully my informant was right with his information weeks ago of Mark Jones joining us, a really good signing.
Well done Ospreys for securing him.
Sam Cross has joined Newcastle Falcons.
How bonkers (don’t hold back!) would it be to consider Max Nagy as a potential centre option? While I do think it’s probably too late to convert him, they’re hard channels to defend, particularly spot-blitzing in the 13 one, there’s a little bit of me that wonders what his size and speed could do there.
Just heard from an ultra reliable source that we have signed a hooker.
Welsh, from Saracens and before that a Cardiff player.
I won't name him but should be obvious from tje above info
Just took a look at my calendar and the sense of frustration with the slow pace of news has eased a little. We still have 12 weeks to go to the first competitive game which is 5 whole weeks later than last year. Plenty of time for things to filter through.
Ospreys have signed Dom Morris on loan from Saracens.
Squad now updated on website. Lists 40 senior players
Who is the big guy in todays video , walking with Ben Warren haven't seen him before is he new?
Over an hour ago, on the Ospreys Facebook page they asked "How do you fancy a new signing to end the week" it would be nice to see an actual new signing.
URC fixtures out tomorrow (Tuesday).
Well radio silence is well and truly over, new signings next by the looks of things.👏👏
They've added Rhys Henry as well, as good as all these signings are it would be nice to see an incomer or 2 as well.
Will Griffiths - new contract.
The Fail say Dragons are favourites to sign Cai Evans, but ourselves and Cardiff want him, whereas TRP say that he has signed for the Dragons.
I think I would believe the latter.
Think I've spotted ex-Scarlets nine Luke Davies in the training video released yesterday. Was at Jersey last season. Makes sense given our lack of depth at nine.
Is there anything positive happening in the background that is to come out, he says hopefully?
Lewis Lloyd our Wales U20 hooker has signed on at the Whites so we have to recruit at hooker now.
Scott Baldwin just retired.
Sam Parry stays. Sign a reserve scrum-half and we can officially field a 23 for next season!
Really disappointing to see the Turks have got ahead of us on Taine Plumtree. Can’t understand why we were not all over this given our links with Plum,
There are lots of good value assistant coaches out there and lots of value in the players market but we seem to be sitting on our hands.
Francis looks like he can be removed from squad list. WRU agreed to his release. Wonder if we will be required to sign Henry Thomas in return
According to a report in todays Rugby Paper, Cardiff are trying to take Cai Evans away from us
Sam Cross signed for Merthyr.
Contract news at 12. Clue suggest somebody fast? My money on Luke Morgan or Harri Doel.
Anyone from London Irish likely to be of interest and affordable
Aubrey gone to the Whites
Rugby Paper saying Francis has year left on his contract and we are seeking compensation if he goes
I’m just living in hope seeing as even TB said our attack was poor last season.
Didn’t Gareth Baber come back from Edinburgh to wales after last season, there is no chance of him is there? He would be an upgrade.
Hopefully the lack of information regarding recruitment is based upon the premise that there will be a large pool of players on the market at more competitive salaries
Dan Evans has announced his retirement
AWJ not returning to the Ospreys next season
The legend that is AWJ has apparently confirmed in an interview that his Ospreys career is over - Alun Wyn Jones hints at potential new club as he says Ospreys career is over and he may play against Wales - Wales Online
Just read the JSG/WRU minutes. My interpretation which may not be totally correct is that squads will be 42 but that will include players aged 21-23 and transitional players will be younger.
So based on that maybe the 42 man squad looks like
Backs 18 Nagy Hopkins Caiser Walsh Protheroe Giles Morgan Cuthbert North Watkin K Will Florence ANO O Will Edwards RMW ANO ANO
Forwards 24 Smith Thomas Phillips Lake Parry Baldwin ANO Henry Botha Warren Beard RDavies Sutton Fender Griffiths Ratti Morris Morgan Tips Deaves T Davies Hickey Regan /Moore AWJ/ANO
Rhys Webb retires from international rugby to take up an offer abroad.
Now we definitely need to sign at least 2 scrumhalves.
I see Harri Morgan is on the bench for the Baa-Baas against Swansea tomorrow night. Might he possibly be back with the O’s sooner than expected?
And in really great news... the Baa Baas went across the road to The Secret Beach Bar and took a group photo all in the same Barbarian training outfits including one smiley Harri Morgan.
https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=268375375712276&set=a.208187788397702&locale=en_GB
The interviewer after the World/BaaBaas game tried to get AWJ to confirm that he was retiring from all rugby. He declined and said he needed to work on his place kicking for Wednesday.
I think he is just teasing us but boy didn't he put in a shift that matched anyone else.
Tomas Francis rumoured off to France. If true wonder if we go after Henry Thomas? Or. stick with Henry and Warren and spend the money on other positions
James Ratti confirmed.
James Ratti confirmed as signed with the Ospreys.
You can now ink Nicky’s name into the squad
Reported in Fail , Hawkins ineligible for Wales , told Gatland , move good for his improvement , and also felt undervalued
sic
poor coaching ?
chasing money not glory !
Investing in ex players as coaches is admirable , but it brings no new ideas , Fussell is not the answer, The appointment of Booth has proved you need new experienced input to progress
Barber would be such an edition and whilst we need funds for players , money for Barber would be so so well spent
better than keeping the likes of Baldwin etc
Halaholo and Ratti confirmed as having left Cardiff.
Maybe we are in for Ratti and should we be in for Willis?
Did anyone watch the Varsity Match last night? My son watched a bit of it and the commentators were saying that one of the Swansea Uni players was moving into the Transitional Group with the Ospreys for next season but he did not catch who they were talking about.
Dewi Lake has re-signed. Great news.
The OP has been updated with the latest news.
If Webb goes (TBD), we definitely need 2 scrum halves plus one transitional/academy 9.
If Parry and or Baldwin go (seemingly unlikely at this point) we will need another 1 or 2 hookers.
Contract news at 10am this morning and the clue looks like a Hurricane....
Anscombe confirmed as gone - received his Leaving Jersey yesterday as did Dan Lydiate.
Well that was quite sobering and deflating in equal measures! Although easy to stick the boot into Booth, when he makes mistakes, they certainly seem to hurt us expoentialy . The beginning of the season we lurched far too much towards a backs based mantra, which unfortunately we just could not do (Fiddlers point about us desperately needing a new attack coach seems more valid by the day). If we are honest, we haven't managed to get our coaching setup correct for possibly ever. Could we possibly see AWJ become part of the coaching setup to help balance the forwards coaching?
When are we likely to get final confirmation of final contract renewal, releases and new signings? Scrum half which was already a problem position for us has now been amplified with Webbs supposed departure and the awful news about Harri. If we go into next year with RMW as our main 9, then we may as well write off next season already as a rebuilding year. Which seems to be the feeling for as long as I can remember..........
Seen a report this morning that Nicky Smith has signed a new 2 year deal with us. To be officially confirmed though.
Based on comments yesterday Lake seems to have signed on. Cardiff are losing 10 of their 23 but sounds like they have retained Teddy Williams but probably lost Ratti. As to whether Ben Thomas comes that depends on whether Dacey and Millard are going. If they are he won’t fit in the 10.
Morgan Morris signed on.
Sigh of relief K Williams signed , looks like the management are going to drip feed us
If Webb doesn't re-sign and we release Harri Morgan (it makes sense given his injury record) we will be left with only RMW as a senior 9 so we have to recruit there. I would love a 9 like Grant Williams from SA or Cam Roigard from NZ.
Jac Morgan has signed a new deal.
I understand that North and Tipuric may still be under contract as both missed twelve months through injury and sometimes the contracts for international players rolled to an extra year in that event. I also thought Francis was out of contract but may be wrong.
From a very reliable source Louis Fletcher is highly thought of, he was the bench option behind Fackrell for Wales u 20s against France. He could also be put in in the transition group
Jason, is there a reason for you not including Baldwin, do you know something that we don't? Is he retiring or moving on.
Will Naggy be around next season? I think that he has said that he sees his future with England and not Wales and given this, it might be better if we retained Cai Evans instead.
Looking at that squad I would take the view there are not 36 players of sufficient quality for a pro contract. If it were me I would look to sign a squad of around 30 -32(excluding transitionals)from the group listedand find another 6 from other teams who may be top heavy in certain positions and have to release good players or offer them poor terms. Cardiff for instance have too many quality back rowers and Ratti has already been rumoured as a return. I suspect you end up with 36-38 senior contracts and 12-15 transitionals. I would be surprised if the young Caiser was not offered and I dont think you can carry injury risks like Moore and Morgan on senior contracts. The market will be thin for both and it may make sense to offer them transitional contracts to see if they can get their bodies right. If Gareth Simpson goes to Saracens as rumoured then Aled Davies could be looking for a job as he is no longer first choice there.
SH = Rhodri Lewis. Tighthead = Kian Hire. Back Row = Morgan Morse, Joe Grabham, Kyle Harris. Winger = Llien Morgan. Those are among the very young who are already regulars at Swansea so I think that speculating who is staying is premature given the way Toby was talking about senior academy and transition players being used.
The key will be the intermediate level between Indigo and regional rugby and how that is funded. The Indigo already gets WRU money so the devil could well be in the financial detail there. If the intermediate club in Ospreylia is funded well enough by WRU we might not be under such pressure.
The other fascinating unknown is the clause; "The clubs are committed to centralising aspects of their commercial operations, with work already in process in this area." I think Ospreys are ahead of the pack thanks to Nick Garcia so how will that lead translate into who pays what? Lots to learn yet.
PS, the website says it was Sean Moore, not Sam Moore who turned out for Whites on the weekend.
I have edited the OP.
If the above squad is what we end up, we will need to recruit at hooker and scrumhalf. Obviously there could be other departures so I will continue to edit the OP as required.
Also, the Rugby paper is saying that Jac and Owen have signed deals with the Ospreys and there is also talk that we could go after Ben Thomas from Cardiff as they seemingly don't have the money to contract all of their players.
We have also offered Anscombe a deal that involves a £100,000 a year pay cut.
So with Myler definitely retiring and judging from his comments on Twitter, Lydiate not taking up a contract or not being offered a deal with the Ospreys and TTW likely off to Japan, we are getting closer to that time when we find out the make-up of next year's squad.
With 58 on the website Senior list I worked it out that up to 5 will retire through age or injury, 10 are senior academy and 6 more could be called transition. The last two groups play mostly for Swansea.
With one player already leaving that brings us down to Toby's 36.
It won't work out that simply but it isn't a very complex HR poser. Quins are looking to 8 players moving on and Exeter 6 with some very big names among them. It is normal.
I’d imagine Nicky/Tomas will be the one we’d have liked to have kept, but unfortunately couldn’t.
Going on what I said below, the breakdown could be something like...
3 LH 3 H
3 TH
6 SR
8 BR
3 SH
2 OH
4 C
4 W
2 FB/Utility
who would all be classed as Senior players so some of the names I listed as being cut could possibly stay.
So Booth has explained that our Senior squad will be somewhere between 36 and 38 players this coming season, which is a few more than we were anticipating when I started this thread. I assume that Transition and Academy players will not be included in that number.
Booth also said that one of the players he wanted to keep has in fact accepted an offer to go elsewhere but that he expected most of those he wanted to keep would stay.
Was going to write that Muderack seriously underestimates English squad sizes (Quins 68, Exeter 76) when I saw that Ospreys now list 58. About 13 or 14 are youngsters who have yet to play but are or have played for Wizards and Whites.
Does anyone know why players like Harri Houston and Harvey Nash suddenly popped up?
We need a big squad because of Wales calls and the number of injuries we carry. (Which I think shows a caring employer)
English clubs can probably afford to carry less players per squad than the Welsh because in theory, they are less like to be affected by international call ups. There are more English clubs than Welsh regions and call ups are probably less per club. How would say Bristol cope with 14 players released to the National squad?
Following on from this debate I listened to Muderak on a pod cast tonight. He said in Wales the average squad was 44/45 with 9 transitional players and in England the averages are 36 and 16 and we will need to move closer to that. Don’t think I have ever seen 30 mentioned.
Yes going by your names above that would be classed as very hard, I would say that both Regan and Hickey in the forwards and Harri Morgan in the backs would be transitional for me, but then I would want to add Lydiate with Webb, Aubrey, Collins and Cai. Aubrey and Cai could be Transitional.
Yes very difficult.
I have not heard of 30 players.Numbers previously mentioned are 44/45.
if we cut from 46 to 30 there would be no need for the suggested pay cuts.
