Our old friend Milldew ahead of the curve again. TRP today reporting that Y11 are seeking to purchase a majority stake in Melbourne Rebels and either a Japnese top league team or a MLR team.
@Allthewaythere That is certainly a possibility. If the Rebels become the Melbourne Ospreys, I think it would be hard for anyone to veto player movement between two sister clubs but I might be wrong.
@Allthewaythere They do run concurrently though. Super rugby is February to May, You won't see shared players. More likely there could be short term loans to cover injuries and there could be an element of academy and coach sharing. I don't believe what any side is called will alter the rules for player movement that already exist.
@Allthewaythere It won't dilute resources. There is an endless supply of capital if Y11 can show prospective investors they have a decent well run stable of clubs/franchises.
aside of it being gut wrenching, it sounds wrong. I thought all 4 regions had to agree on a funding model? I know he can tip the balance by giving more of the 38 to Cardiff and scarlets, but a 2 tier funding model feels very different and completely unfair. Can you imagine the uproar if one of cardiff or Llanelli weren’t given priority?
@jim I cannot answer your question but I can tell you to read the Nick Garcia piece on Wales Online. I definitely believe that Y11 are in this for the long haul and they intend to build a global Ospreys brand.
@Jake Bullet yes mate, I know that the Ospreys are putting the finishing touches to their 3 year plan to get them to where they want to be. We can clearly see that the squad imbalances are being addressed and I fully expect that to continue year on year. The stronger our squad becomes, the better we play and the better we do and we might even go on and win something.
@MD Milldew doesn’t that leave an option of legal challenge due to the impact on their investment in the club? What are The factors behind which 2 clubs become tier 1?
Pivac has the potential to imbalance the funding by his selection of the top 38 players which tilts the union funding towards other sides. Nothing anybody can do legally about that. Milldew generally has his finger on the pulse and it is good to hear from him that we are anticipating this contingency because Pivac won't be here forever.
@Fiddler Pivac's win rate is already terrible, before the next world cup he has a large churn (Owens, AWJ, JDII, Taulupe on the wain) and his ability to integrate players into the side has been....patchy at best.
It’s very real. Pivac is trying to make it a natural transition.
Os are prepared for it. Y11 currently in talks to purchase two clubs around the globe, also involved in an offshore banking scheme that frees a lot more cash up.
WP still had tenancy of his North Dock flat in Llanelli, courtesy of his old club… Conflict of interest?!
Thanks for the info. I’m clearly not interpreting things correctly (Long week), but are you saying Y11 are obviously aware of the nonsense and are prepared to fight it, or willing to accept it? Also how does purchasing 2 clubs help us in our potential predicament ? Again, apologies if I’m missing the obvious
There have been rumours about this for a long time. They are best ignored because I am sure our investors will be fighting very hard to protect their investment and at the appropriate time will outline their strategy, Countless funding options and potential solutions have been put forward but not get the agreement of all parties. There are going to be more and more rumours but they are best ignored.
